Non-BTAM Bisync Support for Universal Link

Maintain and modernize 2780/3780 RJE-style Bisync communications without relying on the BTAM access method. Universal Link embeds equivalent functionality and adds flexible dialing options, while also supporting SNA and TCP/IP for a smooth migration path.

Why Non-BTAM Bisync?

Many IBM mainframe sites still need to communicate with remote Bisync devices or systems using the 2780/3780 RJE protocol. With IBM deprecating BTAM under OS/390 and VSE/ESA, Universal Link removes the dependency by providing built-in, BTAM-equivalent support.

  • Continue existing Bisync workflows without BTAM
  • Preserve compatibility with remote 2780/3780 RJE devices
  • Consolidate operations with the same Universal Link management and auditing

Dialing & Connectivity Options

Choose the dialing method that fits your environment; Universal Link supports multiple options:

  • V.25 bis auto-dial
  • SADL (Switched Access Dedicated Line)
  • Traditional Auto-Call units

Works with any 37xx-compatible communications control unit that supports Bisync.

Operations & Reliability

  • Host- or remote-initiated sessions
  • Scheduling windows; unattended operation (autodial/autoanswer)
  • Error recovery/restart for long-running transmissions
  • Broadcast to multiple remotes without duplicating inputs
  • Automatic EBCDIC ↔ ASCII translation
  • Record sizes up to 4,096 bytes (transparent/compressed data supported)

Security & Migration

  • Mainframe-controlled sessions with user ID/password verification
  • Integration with RACF, ACF2, and Top Secret
  • User exits to invoke external programs at key events
  • Audit trails and transmission reports for governance
  • SNA (LU6.2/LU1) and TCP/IP support included for phased migrations

Compatibility

Designed for MVS and VSE environments and engineered to be release-independent across supported mainframe versions.
